Njunu Tea Factory is located in Kigoro Location , Gatanga Division, Thika District of Central Province. The Factory is situated along Thika - Gatanga Road about 37 kms West of Thika and approximate 78 Kms from Nairobi City of Kenya.

The area under which the factory lies is about 10 acres of land with a catchments area of 986 Hectares of land under tea.

Climatic conditions

Climatically it lies in upper middle altitude  an altitude range of 1920 m.a.s and longitude of 360 53’E and latitude of 00. 47’S with the soil type marginally varying as well drained, deep, dark, red to yellowish red friable to firm, sandy clay with humic acid soil ie Humic Acrisols on tertiary as basic igneous rocks.

Geographical features

Approaching the factory from Thika town side, the Great famous Ndakaini Dam  from which Nairobi Town and Environs get fresh water supply.  The Dam gets its water from the scenic Aberdares Ranges with the Aberdares forest. This has the horizon with naturally designed ranges green from the earth with intertwining carpet strips of green tea bushes within.

Njunu lies along the greatest Mount Kenya in the world that gives it cool green tea which is part of the Great Mount Kenya Region. The Mount Kenya together with the Aberdares ranges makes Njunu catchment to have rainfall almost though out the year. In the Aberdares ranges we have some animal species like Elephants, Buffalos, and Monkeys etc. The Aberdares range is fenced with electrified fence.

Njunu catchment criss-crosses different ecological and cultural diversities varying from grassy to forested environments. The average daily temperatures are about 260C .



Chairman's Report

I hereby submit the report on the performance of the company during the financial year ending 30th June 2012.
Crop production for the year was higher than last year. 12,730,886 kilograms of Green Leaf were delivered for processing at the company's factory. Out of this throughput of 2,941,388 kilograms of tea were made. These throughput and output were higher than last year's levels of 10,786,779 kilograms and 2,794,973 kilograms by 1,854,107 kilograms and 146,415 kilograms respectively. This achievement was at a conversion factor of 23.10% which is equivalent to per 4.33 Kgs of Green Leaf to make one kilogram of Made Tea.
There was an increase in tea prices during the year. The average price realized per kilogram of made tea sold was Kshs. 283.49. This compares favourably with the price of Kshs. 255.70 in 2011.The prices therefore increased by Kshs. 27.79 per kilogramme of sold tea. This year's price of one kilogramme of made tea sold is equivalent to Kshs. 65.48 per kg of green leaf.
The manufacturing costs increased during the year. The average manufacturing cost for the year was Ksh.254.74 for every kilogramme of made tea against the average manufacturing cost of Kshs. 233.46 per kg for last year. There was an increase in the manufacturing cost by Kshs. 21.28 per every kilogramme.This manufacturing cost includes monthly green leaf payment at Kshs. 54.02 per kg of made tea for the year which is higher than Kshs. 46.70 per kg for last year. This year's manufacturing cost was equivalent to Ksh.58.84 per kilogramme of green Leaf.
The company was able to pay Kshs. 667,547,825 for green leaf delivered against a total payment of Kshs 581,777,835 realized the previous year.
The Board of the company did recommend 2.5% payment of dividends to class ‘B’ shareholders appearing in the company’s register as at 30th June 2012.
I wish to report that the factory through its strategic plan has modernised and improved the plant. The improvements included among others are:-
i). Replacement of asbestos roofing for the whole factory which has been done in three phases.
ii). Construction of a new ablution block in line with the Quality Assurance programmes.
iii). Construction of a new boiler house and firewood billeting shed.
iv). Procurement of a new dual purpose boiler and improvement of steam lagging and cladding.
v). Procurement and installation of a new weigh feeder.
vi). Installation of an alarm system.
vii). General replacement in plant and machinery, furniture and fittings and ICT equipments.
The factory has also started developing the newly acquired land at Naivasha by planting trees.

I am happy to report that the factory is ISO 22000:2005 and ISO 9001:2008 certified. These are international standards on food safety and quality management systems.
The factory is Rain Forest Alliance certified. The Rain Forest Alliance is an international non profit environmental and sustainable development organisation that works to conserve biodiversity and to ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land use practises and consumer behaviour. The Company successfully went through the 1st Rain Forest Alliance audit and is currently preparing for the annual audit. Rain forest Alliance annual audits help to ascertain whether the company still meets the requirements.
Njunu Tea Factory Company Limited has joined other factories in the Region in pursuing the generation of electricity from hydro power. Though the project is in its initial stages, once complete, it will become an alternative source of income as surplus electricity generated would be sold to Kenya Power co. ltd through the national grid, whilst we will benefit from cheaper energy. I am made to understand that all factories from other six KTDA Regions have also formed energy vehicles in pursuance of cheaper energy concept. Imenti Tea Factory has already started receiving revenue from sale of power to the National grid, whilst consuming cheaper energy from their power plant. We too in conjunction with our sister companies will benefit the same once the project is completed.

Mavuno ya Chai katika mwaka yalikuwa juu ya yale ya mwaka uliotangulia. Kilo 12,730,886 za majani chai zilipelekwa kutengenezwa katika kiwanda cha Kampuni. Kutokana na kiasi hiki cha chai, kilo 2,941,388 za chai iliyotengenezwa zilipatikana. Kiasi hiki kilikuwa juu ya kile cha mwaka uliotangulia ambacho kilikuwa kilo 10,876,779 za majani mabichi ya chai na kilo 2,794,973 za chai iliyotengenezwa na tofauti ilikuwa kilo 1,854,107 za majani mabichi na kilo 146,415 za chai iliyotengenezwa.Mapato haya kwa kibadilisho cha 23.10 kwa mia ni sawa na kilo 4.33 za majani mabichi ambayo yanatoa kilo moja ya chai iliyotengenezwa.
Bei ya chai ilipanda katika mwaka. Bei wastani ya chai iliyopatikana kwa kila kilo moja ya chai iliyouzwa ilikuwa Kshs 283.49. Bei hii ilikuwa ya juu ikilinganishwa na bei ya mwaka uliotangulia ya Kshs.255.70. Kwa hivyo Kampuni ilikuwa na tofauti katika hizo bei ya Kshs 27.79 kwa kila kilo moja ya chai iliyouzwa. Bei ya chai iliyotengenezwa na kuuzwa katika mwaka ni sawa na Kshs.65.48 kwa kila kilo moja ya majani mabichi.
Gharama ya utengenezaji ilipanda katika mwaka na ilikuwa Kshs. 254.74 kwa kila kilo moja ya chai iliyotengenezwa. Gharama wastani ya mwaka uliotangulia ilikuwa Kshs.233.46 na kwa hivyo tofauti ikawa Kshs 21.28 kwa wastani kwa kila kilo moja ya chai iliyotengenezwa.Gharama ya utengenezaji imejumuishwa na ile ya malipo ya majani chai kwa mwezi ya kshs 54.02 kwa kila kilo moja ya chai iliyotengenezwa yenye ilikuwa juu
ikilinganishwa na ile ya mwaka uliotangulia ya kshs 46.70 kwa kila kilo moja ya chai iliyotengenezwa.Gharama ya utengenezaji katika mwaka ilikuwa sawa na Kshs 58.84. kwa kila kilo moja ya majani mabichi.
Kampuni iliweza kulipa malipo kwa wakulima ya Kshs. 667,547,825 kwa majani chai iliyopokewa kiwandani ikilinganishwa na yale ya mwaka uliopita ya shilingi 581,777,835. Wakurugenzi walipendekeza malipo ya asilimia mbili nukta tano malipo ya mwisho ya mgao kwa wanahisa wote wa hisa za "B" waliokuwa katika kitabu cha wanahisa cha kampumi mnamo tarehe 30 Juni 2012.
Ningetaka kuwajulisha ya kwamba kiwanda chetu kupitia kwa mpango wa strategic plan kimeidhinishwa na kuwa kwa muundo wa kisasa. Ulekebishanji huyo ni katika sehemu zifuatazo:-
i). Kubadilisha kwa paa ya kiwanda chote kutoka mabati ya asbestos na kwa mabati ya kisasa.
ii). Ujenzi wa vyoo vya kisasa kulingana na matarajio ya mpangilio wa Quality Assurance
iii). Ujenzi wa sebule ya boiler
iv). Ununuzi wa boiler mpya pamoja na ulekebishaji wa mitambo yote ya kupitishia mvuke wa moto.
v). Ununuzi wa mtambo wa kupima majani chai inapoelekea kusiagwa.
vi). Ununuzi wa ving’ora.
vii). Ubadilishaji wa mitambo na kuweka mpya kwa mashine, viti na pia mitambo ya tarakishi.
Kampuni pia imenzisha mpango wa kuunda shamba iliyoko Naivasha kwa ajili ya upanzi wa miche.
Niko na furaha tele kuwajulisha ya kwamba kiwanda chetu kimeidhinishwa na kampuni za kimataifa zinazoidhinisha viwanda. Kwa sasa tuko na cheti cha ISO 22000:2005 na pia cheti cha ISO 9001:2008.
Kiwanda chetu pia kimeidhinishwa na Rain Forest Alliance. Shirika la Rain Forest Alliance ni la kimataifa kisichokuwa cha kutengenza faida kinachohusika na ukulima bora na uhifadhi wa mazingira. Kampuni yetu imefaulu katika ukaguzi wa kwanza na kupata cheti. Sasa twajitayarisha kwa ukaguzi wa mwaka huu. Ukaguzi huu husaidia kudhibitisha ya kwamba kampuni inaendelea kutekeleza mahitaji yote.
Kampuni yetu kwa ushirikiano na viwanda vingine vya sehemu hii zimeungana kuona vile inawezekana kuanzisha mradi wa ushalishaji nguvu za umeme. Hata kama mipango hii imo katika hali za mwanzo ,itakapomailizika itachangia pakubwa kupata nguvu za umeme kwa bei
ya chini na tena kuleta mapato kwani nguvu zinazobaki zitauzwa kwa shirika la KPLC.  Kampuni zingine kutoka sehemu zingine za nchi pia zimejiunga kutekeleza miradi kama hii. Kiwanda cha Imenti tayari kimeanza kuuza nguvu za umeme kwa shirika la KPLC wakitumia ile ingine kwa matumizi yao wenyewe. Sisi pia pamoja na viwanda vile vingine tutanufaika pakubwa tutakapokuwa tumemaliza mradi huo.
Kwa niamba ya Baraza la Wakurugenzi, ningetaka kutoa shukrani kwa usimamizi wa halmashauri ya KTDA, wasimamishi na wafanyi kazi wote kwa huduma bora ambazo  wamepeana.
Wenye hisa , wakulima wote pia wamejitolea mhanga kuhakikisha kuwa kampuni ina chai ya kutosha na pia ya kiwango kinachohitajika. Wote wameshikilia kwa kiwango kikubwa kuwezesha kiwanda chetu kufikia pale tumeweza kufika kwa musimu wa mwaka uliopita.

The Company propagates tree seedlings which are sold to the community around the catchment at subsidized prices.
