WEEKLY TEA MARKET REPORT: SALE NO 12 – 31ST  & 1ST APRIL, 2008

MOMBASA AUCTION PERFORMANCE

There was good but irregular demand for the 119,849 packages on offer which eased as the sale progressed with some lines remaining unsold.

Brighter BP1s saw irregular interest and ranged between firm to USC8 dearer for a few improved invoices while others lost USC11 to 18 with mediums a weak feature and declined by USC13 to 25 with some lines remaining unsold but a few improved invoices were firm; lower mediums were discounted by USC4 to 25 but a few well made lines gained with make. Plainer descriptions saw better interest at firm to USC18 and more above last levels.

Brighter PF1s met less interest easing by USC4 to 9 but improved lines gained upto USC8 while mediums were most irregular and varied between firm to USC12 dearer with quality to easier by USC5 to 13 with some teas withdrawn; lower mediums opened firm to USC5 dearer but closed upto USC17 easier. Plainer sorts were irregular ranging between USC10 easier to dearer by upto USC12.

Brighter PDUSTs saw less enquiry losing USC4 to 6 and more while mediums saw price declines of between USC8 to 12 but improved coloury lines appreciated by upto USC3; lower mediums gained USC4 to 6 with plainer types firm to USC6 dearer.

Brighter DUST1s met improved interest gaining USC10 to 24 with mediums fully firm to USC11 above last levels while the very few lower mediums available were irregular opening USC2 dearer but closed upto USC5 below last prices. Plainer DUST1s were firm to USC10 dearer.

In the secondary catalogues BPs were dearer especially well made clean types while PFs were discounted. Clean well sorted coloury Fannings were a strong feature but Dusts tended easier. Other Fannings gained with similar Dusts losing value. BMFs were irregularly dearer.

Pakistan Packers lent strong support while the Egyptian Packers, Yemen and Other Middle Eastern countries showed improved strong enquiry. Interest was maintained by Russia and Kazakhstan with both Bazaar and Sudan more active but the latter was operating at lower levels. The UK was active but more selective with less support from Afghanistan. The Egyptian Government Sector was subdued. Somalia showed strong enquiry at the lower end of the market.

Overall, the market slightly declined compared to last week’s levels.
BP1s lost heavily upto 70cts especially marks of  the best types
PF1s declined from previous week prices of USD 2.27 loosing upto 30cts
Good demand for  best of PD’s  gaining upto 12cts

In the Secondary Catalogue,Fngs1 and Dusts met good demand
